Grant Wins Gas City USAC Indiana Midget Week Feature

Grant Leads All the Way to Win

USAC Indiana Midget Week Feature

At Gas City I-69 Speedway Wednesday

GAS CITY, Ind., June 6 — Justin Grant of Avon, Ind. out-dragged polesitter C.J. Leary of Greenfield, Ind. at the start/finish line on the first lap, survived five restarts including a two-lap shootout at the end, led all 30 laps, and beat runner-up Cannon McIntosh of Bixby, Okla. by just 0.197 of a second to win the USAC NOS Energy Drink national midget race Wednesday night as Gas City I-69 Speedway hosted the second event of Indiana Midget Week.

In the non-wing sprint car feature, Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, Okla. led the first lap but Kevin Thomas Jr. of Avon, Ind. led the next 24 circuits around the quarter-mile clay oval to beat Bacon by 1.332 seconds.

Polesitter Kole Kirkman of Kokomo, Ind. led all 15 laps of the non-wing micro-sprint feature to close the program.

Jason McDougal of Broken Arrow, Okla. started third in the midget feature and also passed Leary at the start to trail only Grant for the first half of the race.

McIntosh, who is just 19, passed McDougal in Turn 4 on a restart with 15 laps down to move into second.

Grant saw his 2.673-second lead over McIntosh disappear with 28 laps down when Tucker Klaasmeyer stopped high in Turn 4. Karsyn Elledge and Jerry Coons Jr. got together in Turn 4 before another lap was completed and McIntosh gave it everything he had coming out of Turn 4 on that restart, but Grant, a native of Ione, Calif., was too strong.

That final restart also saw the 2017 Gas City Indiana Midget Week winner, Michael Pickens of Auckland, New Zealand, drop from third to 22nd, reportedly out of fuel. Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, Calif., who started fifth but dropped as far back as ninth before rebounding, benefited from that and nabbed the final podium position. McDougal hung on for fourth followed by Tanner Thorson of Minden, Nev.

Tyler Courtney of Indianapolis was the race’s hard charger, as he started 15th and finished sixth. Zach Daum and Tanner Carrick were next across the line. Chris Windom started 23rd and scratch in a back-up car and placed ninth, but provisional starters are ineligible for the hard-charger honors. Zeb Wise rounded out the top 10.

Grant’s winning car was RAMS Racing’s No. 4A, which is a Bullet chassis powered by a Stanton SR-11 engine and sponsored by NOS Energy Drink, Rockwell Security and MPV Express.

Like Grant, Thomas had to withstand several restarts in the sprint car feature — four to be exact. Bacon tried the high and low grooves to pass him and was only 0.090 off Thomas’s fastest race lap, but he couldn’t make a pass stick around Thomas’s Hayward/Thomas Motorsports entry sponsored by Grainger.

Max Adams and Corey Smith got by Tim Creech working lap 24 to finish in third and fourth. Thomas Meseraull, who won the last three sprint car features at Gas City in another car, got by Creech on the last lap and placed fifth, and Creech hung on for sixth.

Kirkman, who was driving Rick Rhodes’ No. 51 micro-sprint, had to withstand three restarts enroute to his victory. Brandon Rose, who started 16th and last after a problem in his heat, slipped under Austin Helm in Turn 2 on lap 11 to secure the runner-up honors. Helm held on for third followed by Tyler Gunn. One of the best battles in that race was between Cole Ketcham and Mike Landis, who crossed the line in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Courtney set a new USAC midget 10-lap track record of 2.05.54 in winning the first heat, breaking Kevin Thomas Jr.’s mark of 2:06.16 set in 2013.

Despite the fact there were 40 midgets, 25 sprint cars and 16 micro-sprints on hand, there was only one flip. Oliver Akard flipped hard in the outside of Turn 2 during the third USAC midget heat with three laps down, but emerged under his own power.

There won’t be any races at Gas City this Friday, June 7, but the action resumes on Friday, June 14 with the second annual “Jack and Jiggs Classic” named in honor of track owner Jack Himelick and former promoter Jiggs Thomason.  Sprints on Dirt (SOD) winged sprint cars, USAC Midwest Thunder SpeeD2 midgets, UMP modifieds, street stocks, super streets, and hornets (paying $400 to win) are on the schedule. Last year 106 race cars were in action at this show. The Midwest Oldtimers Vintage Race Car Club will also present an exhibition of race cars from the past.

Fans can see the 2019 schedule and get additional information on the track’s website at GasCityI69Speedway.com. Fans can also follow it on Facebook (@GasCitySpeedwayOnTheGas), Twitter (@GasCitySpeedway) and Instagram (@GasCitySpeedway).
