Beckwith to Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle

By Michelle Sprague

Mason, MI (July 23, 2010) - The Andrews Chevrolet Super Late Models made another appearance at the Spartan Speedway with thunderstorms and rain threatening to put a damper on the Shaheen Chevrolet and Autograph Night racing program. The weather held off, but not before storm clouds gathered on the track during the Super Late Model 40-lap feature.

Jon McNett took off like a shot when the green flag waved leaving Bob Bauer to fend off Logan Beckwith and Jimmy Gallagher. Beckwith got around Bauer and began to reel in McNett, catching him by lap 22. Caution waved for McNett, whose race car put down a line of fluid on the track, ending his night. On the restart, Beckwith and Tim Ryan sat on the front row, with Ryan jumping the start. Beckwith brought the field down, a second time, very slowly, and Ryan ran Beckwith up the track coming out of turn four for the green. Caution waved again, and a restart was in order. Beckwith brought them slowly down to the green, and going into turn one, Ryan and Beckwith tangled, collecting three other cars in the process. Beckwith got his spot back and was able to continue, but Ryan, Joe Hodgeson Jr., and Gallagher retired to the pit with damage of one form or another, and only Gallagher would return to action. At the stripe, it was Jackson’s Beckwith with the win, followed by Sonny Coito, Bob Bauer, Dan Krzywosinski, and Jimmy Gallagher. Evan Barrett and Jon McNett took heat wins.
John Mamula and Justin Kazmar made up the front row for the start of the Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modified division. Kazmar took the early lead, but Mamula dove to the inside to take the spot away on lap two. Caution waved on lap seven and Mamula chose the inside lane for the restart. Ozanich capitalized on the outside and took the lead on lap nine, while Tom Hernly Jr. had made his way to the front, sitting in third. Ozanich, Mamula, Hernly, Larry Wallace and Kazmar were all running nose to tail, but Mamula drifted high and Hernly dove under him for second. Wallace followed suit and Mamula faded to fourth. At lap 20, Hernly jumped to the low side of Ozanich to make the pass and take away the lead, as Coito went to work on Mamula for fourth. Hernly opened up a sizeable lead over the field, but caution on lap 31 erased it. On the restart, Hernly picked up where he left off, leaving Ozanich to hold off Wallace for second. Coming down to the checkered, Mamula and Haughton got together, sending Mamula spinning across the start/finish line, but Hernly Jr. took the win on Shaheen Chevrolet Night, followed by Ozanich, Wallace and Coito. Jim Kennedy, Wallace and Ozanich scored wins in their heats.

With attendance lagging in the Pure Stock division, Landon Hidy took the win over the five car field. Mod driver, Chris Ozanich tried his hand behind the wheel of a Pure Stock, led the first lap, succumbed to Hidy, and got nipped at the line by Matt Childers to finish third. Mark Childers came home in fourth. Kyle Drake retired to the pit early with mechanical problems and was shown in fifth.

The Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock A-Feature saw Wayne Beckner Jr. take a commanding lead over the field, leaving Patrick Denison to fend off Todd Metz Jr., Aaron Taylor and Darren Wright for second. Denison was able to hold on as the trio behind him ganged up on him, trying to take the spot away. Metz tried every angle to get around Denison, while Wright and Taylor duked it out for fourth. At the line, it was Beckner Jr., Denison, Metz Jr., Wright and Taylor. Beckner was also the heat winner. The Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock B-Feature start was wild and wooly, with Darrell Taylor able to break away from the pack, leaving Brad Harbenski, Wayne Parkhurst II, Mike Westphal and Kyle Everson to decide second through fifth. Rich Roberts made his way from the back of the pack to take on the task of reeling in Taylor for first. Roberts ran out of time and came home in second, while Parkhurst, Westphal and Harbenski rounded out the top five. Taylor also won the B heat.
