Joey Iliff wins Modified Special at Shadyhill
Medaryville, Ind.-Beginning to make his presence known in
area modified stock car racing, Rensselaer's Joey Iliff
captured the 25-lap $1000-to-win DIRTcar UMP Summit Racing
Equipment Modified Nationals special at Shadyhill Speedway
Saturday night. The
victory was the 20-year-old speedster's second win in as
many nights of racing at the quarter-mile dirt oval.
Starting on the inside of the front row of the 20-car field,
Iliff raced with seven-time modified track champion, Nick
Allen, the first few laps until engine woes sent Allen to
the pits. Five
yellow flag caution periods slowed the action, but Iliff, in
his second year of modified competition, was up to the task
of leading the way on the restarts and building a good
margin over second place-running Bub Patrick.
Starting 11th in
the field, Roger Cavness put on a show, racing around the
outside of competitors, picking off a car here and a car
there, finally moving into third place on lap 16. Iliff
had a solid lead at the checkered flag with Patrick and
Cavness, both former track champions, giving chase. Rounding
out the top six were Toby Howard, Jordan Danford and Lynn
points leader Brad DeYoung dropped out of the feature and
was credited with 17th place.
''It's been a tremendous midyear part of the season,'' said
Iliff after his win. ''I've
been racing a lot here and at Kankakee (Ill.) and Plymouth. I
need to thank my Mom and Dad and Bernie Schubert at B&S Race
Cars for their help. It
was nerve racking at the drop of the green (flag) with
(Nick) Allen on the outside of me. I
was watching him and watching him and then I saw an
opportunity on the bottom and I took it.''
DeMotte's Chris Tippit won for the sixth time in I-Mod
division feature competition, defeating Jon Robbins, Travis
Wolford, Guy Rugg and Brian Craig in the 20-lap headliner. Robbins
and Tippit are in a tight battle for season track
championship honors. Chris
Joseph, of Kewanna, stayed out front for all 15 laps and
captured the Pure Street feature race. TJ
Larson and Robert Schmidt chased Joseph to the checkered
flag with Joseph scoring his fourth win of the year.
14-year-old Jacob Wilkinson, of West Lafayette, won the
15-lap Sport Compact (four-cylinder) division feature,
getting by Ryan Lagestee in the closing laps to win for the
first time this season. Lagestee
finished second. In
other four-cylinder feature action, 17-year-old Hunter
