'Bullet' Bobby Frisch Triggers Celebration, Targets Victory Lane
at Rockford on Wild Wednesday
By Jordan Kuehne
Loves Park, IL (July 14, 2010)
- Patience is indeed a virtue and Bobby Frisch tested
both sides of the coin tonight at the Rockford Speedway, waiting
for his chance to return to the quarter-mile that saw him win
a title in the Mtn Dew RoadRunners last season on Wild Wednesday
action. Frisch wasted no time in moving to the front once the
25
lap main event got underway however, working his way to the front
and biding off a late race challenge from Gene Marocco to pave
his way into victory lane and earning valuable points towards
another potential crown, this time in the Mtn Dew RoadRunner
Super Summer
Series. In the Allison Legacy’s main event, birthday boy
Kyle Voss contributed to a continuing theme of newfound parity
within the division, fending off Mark Hayes and Dwight Dunlap
for his first feature win. Vinny Mangiaracina, Olivia Chance,
Dennis
Smith Jr, Cory Cootware and Rachael Pinkerman were also victorious
on the evening.
In the 25-lap showcase event of the evening, Beau Lawson zoomed
out front to lead the Mtn Dew RoadRunners Super Summer Series to
the green flag. Dennis Smith Jr. and ‘Bullet’ Bobby
Frisch quickly closed up to the back bumper of Lawson as they dueled
for second behind the leader.
Frisch gunned his way up to the bridesmaid’s position before
targeting the lead, negotiating his way to the top spot with seven
laps in the books. Fast qualifier Gene Marocco meant business behind
Frisch, picking up cars one by one before a spirited battle for
second with Smith Jr demanded Marocco’s attention. The venerable
veteran made his move work with four laps remaining, grabbing second
and eyeing the lead.
Marocco simply ran out of time however, as Frisch once again familiarized
himself with victory lane at the high banked facility.
“The car was fast and I’ve been waiting for this opportunity
to race,” an excited Frisch stated after the race. “I
knew I had a car to get the lead and I saw Marocco closing at the
end there. The tires were starting to go and I just tried to hit
my line and not give him a chance to get by me on that last lap.
It worked and I’ll certainly take the win.”
Marocco settled for a hard fought second while Smith Jr. managed
third. Terrance Robinson worked his way up to fourth late while
Lawson rounded out the top five in fifth.
Kyle Voss jumped out front in the early stages of the Allison
Legacy headliner. Voss, who turned 21 on Tuesday, celebrated his
birthday by maneuvering his way to a nice cushion while Mark Hayes
and defending champion Dwight Dunlap dueled for second behind him.
The 12-lap event was winding down when Voss felt pressure from
second place Hayes who was rapidly slicing into the leader’s
margin. The young gun didn’t show any signs of youth though,
hitting his marks on the final lap as Hayes peeked low for the
lead to no avail.
Voss fended off Hayes to become the third feature winner in as
many weeks in the division, encompassing the newfound parity within
the Allison Legacy’s.
“This is the greatest feeling in the world,” an ecstatic
Voss said in the winner’s circle. “Man, oh man does
this feel great. I knew he (Hayes) was there and I just tried to
stop him from getting momentum to get around me. I want to win
the title and get back here.”
Hayes held on for second as Dunlap took third. Brian Heaberlin
finished off the field in fourth.
Deric Bloomingdale found the front in the early stages of the
15-lap main event for the Crap Scrappers Hornets. Bloomingdale’s
stay up front wasn’t long as Vinny Mangiaracina rocketed
from his fifth place starting position to the top spot with three
laps completed.
Steve McBride and points leader Devon Dixon were hot in pursuit,
working their way by Bloomingdale with ease before setting their
sights on each other as well as the leader. Dueling for second
until the final laps, McBride emerged ahead of Dixon at the line
but in doing battle, the two hot shoes allowed Mangiaracina to
escape to victory and gain valuable ground in the points standings.
“I want to win the championship and that’s what I’m
here to do,” Mangiaracina stated after the race. “I
know there’s a ways to go yet and we have to have some more
finishes like these. Consistency is the key and I knew they were
closing at the end but the car was just fast enough to hold them
off and get the job done.”
McBride and Dixon tallied second and third place efforts respectively
while Tim Dix came home fourth. Two-time feature winner Justin
Pearson finished off the top five in fifth.
A heated INEX Legends duel excited the crowd in their 20-lap main
event. Rachael Pinkerman, a feature victor in 2009, made her return
to the quarter-mile in style grabbing the lead when the green flag
waved.
‘Mad’ Maxx McNamara wasn’t far behind however,
as the fast qualifier quickly set foot behind her, slowly closing
up to Pinkerman’s bumper in the turns before trying to slingshot
past on the straightaways. The two experienced drivers played cat
and mouse for several laps before McNamara finally made his move
with two laps remaining.
Smashing the gas out of turn two, McNamara pulled even with Pinkerman
heading into turns three and four and even edged ahead by a nose
at one point. Pinkerman had the preferred high line however and
used it to gain momentum on the frontstretch, regaining the lead
and maintaining her composure to edge McNamara by a nose for the
victory.
Pinkerman’s successful return relegated McNamara’s
stellar effort to second as Cory Cootware came home third. Josh
Davis and Brandon Heisler rounded out the top five in fourth and
fifth respectively.
In the Winged Women on Wheels feature event, Laura Siarkiewicz
held the early lead. The 12-lap event wasn’t short for action
in the early stages as Olivia Chance quickly dashed past Siarkiewicz
and into the lead.
Chance was never challenged after her pass on lap two, negotiating
her way through lapped traffic and building a solid cushion over
second place Chandale Swartout. After points leader Tracy Wallin’s
early race exit to the pits mired her in last, Chance’s dash
to the checkers earned the Roscoe native valuable points.
“My intentions are to track down (Wallin) and win the championship,” a
pleased Chance stated in victory lane. “I just drove the
car tonight and we had a fast car after we fixed last week’s
problems. That obviously helped, and seeing her (Wallin) pull off
early, it just inspired me to race even harder and gain the ground
we need.”
In her first career race, Mary McBride managed a solid third place
finish while Pamela Toepfer collected fourth. Siarkiewicz dropped
back to fifth and finished there to complete the top five.
The INEX Bandoleros 10-lap headliner followed a familiar script
as 11-year-old young gun Cory Cootware grabbed the top spot early.
Cootware held off an early challenge from Deanna Chandler for the
lead and successfully negotiated a late race caution for his third
consecutive victory in the series.
The wire-to-wire win allowed the Michigan driver to collect another
trophy, his ninth in the series at Rockford. Chandler held on for
second as Morgan Melichar completed the field in third.
The final event of the evening got off to a fast and furious beginning
as the National Figure 8 League headliner served up the excitement.
Brian Mayer held the top spot over the course of the first four
laps as Adam Cartwright nipped at his heels in second. Cartwright
made his move with six laps to go in the ten lap event, trying
to work his way by Mayer on the inside but the door was slammed
shut and the two drivers made contact sending Mayer spinning.
The caution flew for the action on the infield and Mayer was deemed
to have been an innocent bystander, allowing the Machesney Park
native to regain his spot up front while Cartwright fell to the
back for his role in the incident. On the restart, Dennis Smith
Jr. pushed his way past Mayer into the lead and brought Figure
8 ace Tom Schneider with him into second.
Mayer fell off the pace at the halfway point and exited to the
pits as Schneider set his sights on the win. Smith Jr. was simply
too strong though, muscling his way to victory lane and collecting
the win.
Schneider settled for second while Lloyd Hawkins quietly notched
a solid third. Cartwright rallied for fourth and Dave Lumsden Jr.
rounded out the top five in fifth.
The Yellowbook Hornet Challenge Second Over the Line Wins Race
featured a chess match up front. Deric Bloomingdale paced the field
over the opening five laps before slowing his car down knowing
that the second place finisher was the winner. Steve McBride and
Jason Dull refused to show their cards, and the three drivers were
practically side-by-side exiting turn four coming to the checkers.
Bloomingdale crossed the line first and in a cruel twist of irony,
finished last, as McBride trumped the rest of the field’s
strategy and took the win, edging Dull by inches for the victory.
