Woodworth Claims Two at Quincy
By: Jack Walbring
Quincy, IL (August 3, 2008) - Denny Woodworth made
the night very worthwhile on Sunday, August 3 during International
Eyecare Center Night at the Races at Quincy Raceways. Woodworth
took not one but two feature event wins in the Budweiser J&J
Steel IMCA Late Model division. The first feature event was the
make up from the rained delayed July 27 main event. Woodworth
who started in the fourth row clawed his way to the front of
the field on the fifthteenth lap by passing Kevin Tomlinson.
Woodworth pulled away to a comfortable lead but a lap twenty
caution flag brought Mark Burgtorf to his rear bumper and the
race was on to the checkered flag. Woodworth held off Burgtorfs
every move and won by a mere half a second. Tomlinson held on
for the third spot followed by Ron Elbe in fourth and Billy Genenbacher
in fifth.
The regular main event for the IMCA Late Models looked to
belong to Sam Halstead as he jumped into the lead at the drop
of the green flag and pulled to a comfortable lead until mechanical
problems brought the Superman to a stop on the back
straight on the twenty first lap. Woodworth had worked his way
to the second spot from his sixth row starting spot and took
over the lead position on the restart. Keith Pratt tried in vain
to get past Woodworth but had to settle for the second spot at
the checkered flag. Jason Frankel charged into the third spot
followed by Mark Burgtorf in fourth and Nick Ingalls in fifth.
Ingalls, Jerry Weisenberger and Halstead were the heat race winners
with Burgtorf laying claim to the Summy Tire and Auto Center
Trophy Dash. Jason Perry won the rain delayed makeup dash. Frankels
poor tenth place finish in the make up feature combined with
his third place finish in the other feature allowed Burgtorf
to climb to within fourteen points after the evening events with
three points nights remaining.
The Miller Lite Modified division had severe problems in
the feature event as ten caution flags during the first five
laps brought the action to a premature checkered flag. Michael
Long claimed yet another feature event win, his ninth in ten
points races. David Wietholder, Tony Dunker, Frankie Wellman
and Shawn Deering rounded out the top five. Dunker, Steven DeLonjay
and Jared Schlipman were the heat race winners with DeLonjay
scoring the win in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash. Long now
holds a two point margin over Tony Dunker in the points race
as the young DeLonjay had problems in the feature event which
led to his dropping back to the third in the points battle.
Jeff Mueller took his seventh feature win in fourteen events
in the Triple R Performance Engines Sunoco IMCA Stock Car class.
Mueller held off Dave Wietholder in second, Chris Webb in third,
Chris Wibbell in fourth and Sarah Woodhurst in fifth. Woodhurst
and Andrew Griffin were the heat race winners. Mueller now has
a very slim one point advantage over Chris Wibbell in the chase
for the first ever IMCA Stock Car Track Points Championship battle.
Wes Mayfield laid claim to the feature event win in the August
27 makeup main event for the Tims Machine Shop Hobby Stocks
over Steve Carlin in second, Mike Wiley in third, Jeremy Buss
in fourth and Aaron Brocksieck in fifth. Several cars were unable
to continue to compete in the regular events the rest of the
evening leaving only eight cars to do battle. Brocksieck took
the main event win over Bobby Anders in second, Steve Carlin
in third, Mike Wiley in fourth and Jim Powell in fifth. Anders
and Wes Mayfield were the heat race winners. Brocksieck now holds
a nine point advantage over Mayfield with only three points race
nights remaining on the schedule.
This next Sunday night, August 10 finds Budweiser/Rinella
Distributing Night at the Races featuring all four Quincy Raceways
