Story & Photos by Stan Kalwasinski
September 23, 2016
Kankakee, Ill.-With the season winding down, the full-bore super late models invaded the Kankakee County Speedway for the first time in a while Friday night with Ryan Unzicker winning the $2,000-to-win Sunoco American Late Model Series ''The Land of Lincoln 40'' event.
A winner in the past in super late model action at Kankakee, Unzicker scored his 12th career victory at the three-eights-mile dirt oval.  The El Paso speedster defeated Mike Spatola in the feature chase with Spatola pressuring Unzicker most of the way.
A field of 17 cars started the 40 lapper but a high-speed, on-the-gas, wreck on the back stretch on the first lap knocked out two top contenders - Rusty Schlenk and Kevin Weaver.
Mike McKinney locked up his second career division title as he captured the 20-lap main event for DIRTcar UMP modifieds.  Hailing from Plainfield, McKinney scored his ninth feature win of the season over Vince Cooper.  Overall, the victory was McKinney's 16th of the year.
Earl Park, Indiana's Jerrad Krick was the winner of the 15-lap headliner for UMP Stock Cars.  Krick defeated Andrew Funk and Don Hilleary.  Brian Deavers, of Bloomington, claimed top honors in the UMP Sport Compact (four-cylinder division) 15-lap main event.
Battling for division track championship honors, Jon Robbins and Chris Tippit each won a feature race in UMP Pro Modifieds (I-Mods) competition.  Robbins scored the win in the 15-lap makeup feature from last week with Tippit winning the night's regularly scheduled headliner.
The Kankakee speed plant hosts its final points racing event next Friday evening.

Frank Wright was ok after flipping his No. 22 during the UMP Stock Cars feature.  Wright's car lost the driveshaft and,
eventually, the entire rear end, during a wild, flipping, ride.

Wright's missing rear axle assembly sits on the track still dripping fluid.

Another wreck - this time during the UMP Pro Late Models feature.

A high-speed, on-the-gas, wreck on the backstretch during the first lap of the Sunoco ALMS 40 put contenders
Rusty Schlenk (91) and Kevin Weaver (B12) out of the race.
