PVCS Cancels Bomber Enduro

By James Watson

Danville, IL (July 10, 2010) - The attendance for this evenings race was down despite it being the last day of the Vermilion County Fair. Due to a low car count the track was forced to cancel the scheduled Bomber enduro race. Despite this there were several free giveaways for this evenings events. FS Farm Supply gave away collapsible lunch coolers to lucky winners of trivia questions as well as simply matching two numbers on a drivers Licence. The winner who came the farthest produced a valid Oregon Drivers License. Wild Hare Photography also gave away a certificate for a free 8x10 action shot of a fans favorite PVCS driver. The winner was Glen Hall and the driver of his choice was Bobby Pierce. All Source Rental sponsored a bike race during the intermission and six riders were present. There were three boys and three girls present to race with their ages ranging from 4 and a half to 10. The finishing order for the guys was: David Moore (10 yrs old); Steven Moore (10 yrs old) and Jacob Grady (7 yrs old). The girls finishing order was: Shelby Acorn (10 yrs old); Jenna Sanford (8 yrs old) and Courtney Sanford (4 ½ yrs old). Bobby Pierce posed with each rider for a photo opportunity and Wild Hare Photography is giving each participant a 4x6 copy of their photo.

The concession this evening was ran by the 4-H Federation. They were managed by Loretta Reifsteck and Barbara Weaver. The volunteers worked through the heat and humidity to ensure good food was available to the fans as well as those individuals that were enjoying the last day of the Vermilion County Fair. Caring Clovers 4-H club from Danville, IL. volunteers were: Kelsie Dickson, Elizabeth Galloway, Shelby Lierman, Sissy Romack and lead by Robin Romack. Also working were the Henning Spools and Spoons 4-H club volunteers: Christina, Charlotte and Ben Brumett from Bismark; Brian Huffman, from Rossville; Lance Smith, from Coppell Texas and Lead by Cheryl Brumett. It is wonderful to see such a group of dedicated youngsters involved in their community.

The evenings event starts with the qualifying laps for the Modifieds. The top five qualifiesr of the evening are: Josh Ferguson (2F) 15.194; Gabe Menser (G1) 15.296; Roger Cary (44) 15.472; Arby Burton (B97) 15.559 and AJ May (A9) 15.595. As Heat race one got underway we see Gabe Menser (G1) jump into an early lead with the real battle settling in for third. Arby Burton (B97) Roger Cary (44) and Ryan Cary (144) battle back and forth the entire Heat race for the third position. The top five are: Gabe Menser (G1); Josh Ferguson (2F), Arby Burton (B97), Ryan Cary (144) and Roger Cary (44). The second Heat race gets a caution on lap two when David Henderson (H28) spins in turn two. A second cautions drops on lap seven when Casey Lawson (27L) spins in turn four and collects Henderson. Lawson had to be towed off the track and a lap later Henderson left the track. Our winner, like the first Heat Race winner lead all laps of their race. The top five were: AJ May (A9), Kevin Gummere (39); Randy Milburn (33R); Jeff Sanford Jr (74J) and Jim Bailey(76). The Feature races tonight are important ones for the drivers tonight. These races will count for UMP Track, Regional and National points. Gabe Menser (G1) takes an early lead followed by Josh Ferguson (2F) and AJ May (A9). Josh makes a good move down low to take the lead on lap five. On lap eight there seems to be a lot of bumping for position between David Henderson (H28), Roger Cary (44) and Ryan Cary (144) as they come down the front stretch. Ryan Cary (144) leaves the track out of turn two as Roger Cary (44) enters the infield from the back stretch. On lap twelve David Henderson (H28) catches the inner safety barrier going into turn four and has to be towed off the track. On the restart Josh Ferguson (2F) gets too high in turn two and drops from first to sixth. Shortly after the restart Ferguson is battling for fourth with Randy Milbur (33R) and Don Kiger(01). On lap twenty AJ May (A9) pulls into the infield, he was our leader at that point. We see Arby Burton (B97); Don Kiger (01) and Josh Ferguson (2F) battling for second position when Ferguson gets too high and taps the wall bringing out a caution on lap twenty four. As we enter the last lap it is a close race between Gabe Menser (G1) Josh Ferguson (2F) and Don Kiger (01) and Don Kiger manages to get that little extra to get him across the line first. Kiger started this Feature race from the last position. Our top five finishers are: Don Kiger (01), Gabe Menser (G1), Josh Ferguson (2F), Arby Burton (B97) and Randy Milbur (33R).

The Pro Late Models saw three cars scratch from their Heat races. Heat one had Jerry Lerly (7L) pull out of the heat race and we were unable to determine why. The first caution for this race came on lap five when Kyle Hammer (45) spun in turn four. John Barnard (B8) also got high in turn four and left the track. Bobby Pierce (32) took the lead early and never let up to have our finishing order: Bobby Pierce (32), Kyle Hammer (45) and Roben Huffman (33H). The second Heat race is also marred with two cars pulling out. Dustin Griffin (20) and Matt Beadles (17B) scratch from the Heat race. A car of some special mention that is participating in this Heat event is the number B7 which is being driven by George Clevenger. This car is a project car for Parkland College and the instructor is driving. The first caution comes out when Curtis Hobbs (53) spins entering turn four. The rest of the three car Heat race is event free and the finishing order is: Joseph Hughs (7H), George Clevenger (B7) and Curtis Hobbs (53). Dustin Griffin (20) is able to get his car ready for the feature event. The drivers treat the crowd to some excitement when Dustin Griffin (20), Bobby Pierce (32) and Kyle Hammer (45) are three wide entering turn three. On lap eighteen Curtis Hobbs pulls into the infield calling an end to his evening. Our top five Feature finishers are: Bobby Pierce (32), Dustin Griffin (20), Joseph Hughs (7H), Roben Huffman (33H) and Kyle Hammer (45). Our project car from Parkland College finished in sixth place.

The Street Stock class was missing a few of their regular drivers but those that were on hand gave the crowd some excitement. These drivers were not about to let the Pro Late Models be the only drivers to put on a show. In fact they decided to one up them. On the first lap of Heat one we see them enter turn one four wide. Not only do they enter the turn that way they come out of it still four wide and manage to do so without incident. Nathan McNeese (50) manages to make his move from the seventh to second by the third lap. With just two laps to go Steve Nolen Jr (66JR) gets loose in turn four and Cory Young (75) gets into him and spins. On the restart McNeese takes the lead and never looks back. Our top five are: Nathan McNeese (50), Ian Keller (7D), Scott Thrasher (19), Mike Hops Jr (22H) and Steve Nolen Jr (66JR). Our second Heat race is ran incident free and the drivers do not try to top four wide in the corners and manage to maintain less than three wide in corners. The top five finishers are: Jared Krick (99K), John Van Pelt (X), Kyle Laughlin (92), Josh Foxworthy (38) and Lee Hall (90). The Feature gets a little jumbled, read carefully so you can keep up with this. Our first caution comes out on lap 5 when Kyle Laughlin (92) spins in turn four. We try for a restart when Scott Thrasher (19) jumps early, tapping into Nathan McNeese (50) causing a caution on the restart and Thrasher is sent to the back of the pack. They line them up again for another attempt at the restart. Again Laughlin (92) spins in turn four causing the caution flag to stay out. Before we can get a restart Bryan Sharp (44) has a cloud of smoke come from his car and he leaves the track. We finally get a good restart only to get a caution flag to drop on lap six when Josh Van Pelt (X) and Josh Foxworthy (38) spin. The track officials move both drivers to the back of the pack since they spun individually and stopped traffic. Wait a minute, I think I see the flag man nailing the yellow flag to the side of the stand. On the restart Steve Nolen JR (66JR) slides up the track making contact with Ian Keller (7D) causing a flat tire and ending Ians’ evening. The rest of the race is incident free and the final five are: Jared Krick (99K), Cory Young (75), Lee Hall (90), Scott Thrasher (19) and Nathan McNeese (50).
