Local Stock Car Driver Matt
Arvia Passes Away
Griffith, Ind.-Local stock
car racer, Matt Arvia, 37, of Griffith, passed away on February 3. Arvia
competed at many of the area speedways, including the South Bend
Motor Speedway and Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Ill., as well
as racing in the annual Bahama Brackets at Illinois' Rockford
Arvia also raced at the
now-shuttered Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, joining the
Pure Stock (four-cylinder) competition there in 2004 and winning
several feature races in the class. He
moved up into the track's Turbo Stox division and enjoyed his best
overall season in 2013 when he finished eighth in the final points
Arvia is survived by his
beloved daughters: Madelyn and Natalie Arvia; loving parents: Jim
and Cathy (nee Shulke) Arvia; dear sister: Katie Arvia; grandmother:
services will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 10:00 AM at
3227 Ridge Rd., Lansing, IL. Friends
are invited to visit with Matt's family on Tuesday, February 7 from
3:00 - 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Matt
will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, IL. He
was a foreman for Norfolk and Southern Railroad and an avid Cubs fan
in addition to coaching his daughter's softball team.
Matt Arvia and his No. 34 competed a few times
in the late model division at the Grundy County Speedway in Morris,
Ill., in 2016.

Arvia raced at Illiana Motor Speedway in the
track's Turbo Stox in 2015, racing his No. 34U
in tribute to old time racer Stash Kullman, who always had the No. 4U on
the side of his cars.
